Mr Richard Starnes’ intelligent and delightful piece, which appeared in the Friday Morning edition of The Spartanburg Herald on 13 December 1963, is without doubt the very best article that I’ve ever ever ever ever read, or am likely to read, on Handles Messiah. And it was too good not to share, particularly at this time of year:
I remember saying to a receptionist at a place I used to work that we were going to Handel’s “Messiah” and she looked at me with a blank look on her face and said, “I’ve never heard of them.”

It has been 50 years since this was published and things have progressed exponentially towards consumerism rather than spirituality. With the on-click shopping one would think many of us would have more time to engage in meaningful activities and give back to others through volunteering for example. That’s what the legacy of St. Nicholas celebrated tomorrow is about. Great pick.
