I never cease to be amazed at some of the books that people literally throw away. Such scandalous and violent disposals are certainly a sign that we are living in the last days. A recent trip to the local tip saw me return with three books:
- Elisabeth Elliot’s Furnace of the Lord: Reflections on the Redemption of the Holy City
- Stanley Hauerwas’ The Peaceable Kingdom: A Primer In Christian Ethics
- Thomas Hardy’s The Complete Poetical Works of Thomas Hardy: Volume 1: Wessex Poems, Poems of the Past and the Present, Time’s Laughingstocks (which Amazon is selling from US$109.98!)
An enquiry to the bloke who works there ‘in the book section’ revealed that the most thrown away book at the tip is the Bible.
I love the tip shop at Green Island, I always pick up great books there. Yes – always many many bibles. Makes you think

One of my favourite places too…though sometimes it takes a bit of hunting to get something decent. You obviously went on a good day, Jason! (I have found two or three out there that I’ve subsequently sold on Trade Me or Alibris for far more than the ten cents they cost me!)
