‘The only thing that consoles us for our miseries is diversion, and yet this is the greatest of our miseries. For it is mainly what prevents us from thinking about ourselves, leading us imperceptibly to our ruin. Without it we would be bored, and this boredom would drive us to seek a more solid means of escape. But diversion amuses us and guides us imperceptibly to death’. – Blaise Pascal, Pensées (Indianapolis: Hackett, 2005), 6.
Diversion is also what mainly keeps us from thinking about our theses. And this is how I came across the quote in the first place–I was looking for a diversion from my thesis and I was convicted! Thanks Jason. Hopefully I will never desire to go to your blog again!
(just kidding)
