Dear Jason, I was interested to see the word “racialism,” not “racism.” Is the former a Briitishism? I use “racialism” in my new book and elsewhere to connote the use of race as a defining category rather than the more overtly hostile “racism” and “racist.” It is racialism that Willie James Jennings identifies in “The Christian Imagination.” It is the more modern categorization of people by skin tone that is the pernicious reality of life in the USA these days. Hello Joe. It’s lovely to hear from you. I don’t know if it is a Britishism; it may well be, but I’ve tended to associate the idea with those articulated by sociologists like Du Bois. These days, of course, the terms ‘racialism’ and (the more common) ‘racism’ tend to be used interchangeably. Many of those aware of the once-made distinction welcome this development as a more honest naming of the relationship between the two ideas. I’m still trying to understand the complexities. Willie James Jennings’ work has been the most helpful I’ve read so far. I’m still looking forward to reading your latest book as well. Pax, JG
